After a first down they went with an option look, which looked a lot like Urban Meyer's anemic option set in 2014 with Ohio State.

Jabari Moore swiped the option pitch for the game's first score and I really thought Army would put a stranglehold on the game there with some ball control. When the dust settled, Cincinnati proved they belonged in the rankings and showed Army the door.

After the defensive score, Army just couldn't get the motor going on offense. Penalties played a big role all day as Army continually found themselves behind the sticks on offense. Army's first half drives were:

9 play punt

6 play punt

3 play punt

and that's just not going to win many football games.

It wasn't all bad, there was some damn fine execution in the second drive.

They took a shot on a first down for an incompletion and in the scheme of things this put Army behind the sticks once again. Army played on fourth down and this time, with Cincy expecting the run, Christian Anderson was brought down in the backfield. Turnover on Downs. And that was pretty much the story of the day: penalties and poor execution that stalled drives and lost the game.

Army was getting the defense they needed all game. Again Jabari Moore, this time back in coverage turns up his second takeaway of the game. Army also had a huge goal line stand to keep the game close.

Army found themselves behind the sticks a lot of the time and the Bearcats defense deserves a lot of credit for taking away the inside. Brent Davis showed some new plays, but they were played out of the fullback dive, so if they wanted to run in the middle they would have to get creative. They ran the inside counter 'Doc'once for like 6 yards. Might have been nice to see them play the triple option for that counter instead of calling for some of the early passing.

Cincinnati played well, and it just sucks that Army has to list this as a missed opportunity. Army hasn't beaten a ranked opponent since 1972, and apparently that's not going to change this season.

Army Cincinnati story, stats, highlights and replay.

Chrishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10304065061303081586noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5234153752035546757.post-24151784292180951112020-09-26T15:53:00.002-04:002020-09-26T15:53:32.675-04:00Army/Cincinnati Game notes
Army/Cincinatti game notes are up.

Cinci's is here.

Army has theirs here. After that bonus round two minute drill to end the half Army sharpened their game and ended up with a second straight blowout win.

The one thing I'd like to mention for future reference is that Army is at a point in the season where they have shown the depth of their bench a lot more than the depth of their playbook.

Army sits first in the nation in rushing offense with infinity rush ypg, #1 in 3rd down conversion pct. (.714), 4th in total defense (192 ypg), #4 in scoring defense (3.5 ppg). After two games, that's a good place to be looking ahead to a nationally ranked road test.

You have to wonder what they have in store for the nationally ranked Cincinnati bearcats.

After 2 weeks of play puts Army among only 9 teams that are undefeated and uninfected after 2 games.

ULM Army story, stats, highlights and replay.

Chrishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10304065061303081586noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5234153752035546757.post-16879642050972919312020-09-11T14:55:00.000-04:002020-09-11T14:55:10.751-04:00Army Louisiana-Monroe Game Notes

Army has game notes up for Louisiana-Monroe.

Louisiana-Monroe has game notes up for Army.
Chrishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10304065061303081586noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5234153752035546757.post-3207149001666362282020-09-11T00:44:00.464-04:002020-09-13T10:34:42.721-04:00Yearbook: Northeastern Louisiana State Chacahoula
Before the school was known as Univ. of Louisiana-Monroe it was called Northeastern Louisiana State.

The Northeastern State yearbook has online offerings which seem to include a small selection of years: 1954 and then 1958 through 1977. Looking more closely at the site, there is searchable access to years: 1933 through 1977

There are some football pages therein, if you care to do some digging. overall this is a good effort by the ULM archivist to get this collection of Chacahoula online.

One of the things you get a lot of the time in these annuals is an intentional bias in the sports reporting, in fact the reporting in yearbooks is so low stake, you have to expect a student bias toward their teams.

Bias in reporting is there to be seen, and yearbooks do a great job of illustrating how American collegiate culture has changed through the years, school by school. One of the things that can be seen pretty clearly is some of the attitudes toward race not just in college admissions, but in terms of student life, participation on teams and access to diverse student groups.

A comparison of the class pictures through the years can give us a simple idea about a school's diversity and attitudes toward race and sports are well documented elsewhere. Pay attention to the theme of segregation and see in what ways you might find evidence of a bifurcation of social spaces and ideals.

One thing easily noticed in any school's yearbook collection is that just as sure as these institutions offered an avenue of higher learning - there have always been attitudes, some more common than others, that have presented obstacles for a large selection of students and potential students, athletes and aspiring athletes. Time may have moved on and the names of the schools may even have been changed, but some of these attitudes and ideals have remained. Today, this mechanization of racism is no longer a mission of the college admissions office, but may still reside in local culture, in the behaviors of students and in the the makeup of the school's administration and student organizations.

Baseball 1958

NESCCheer 1958

'Warbonnets' Cheer squad 1977

The point to be made is not that racism is evident in today's America, it's that there are a number of different levels of racism which effect citizens in different ways and at different times. It is also important to iterate that some attitudes regarding racial (in)equality remained in place and is still active today. Sure, black inclusion in the cheerleading squad can be seen as progress, but what for if you're just going to spend your 4 years dressing up as a native American squaw? As it played out, ULM didn't move to change their original "Indians" nickname until the NCAA cracked down on using native American imagery in college sports in 2007.

I don't want to give the impression that this is the case only at Louisiana Monroe, this is most every traditional college and college town in the US. Army took anything and everything they wanted in the game without much Blue Raider resistance.

It didn't help Middle Tennessee State that they got stung by the injury bug early and often losing their starting center on the 4th play of the game- they replaced him with a freshman and two plays later the Army defense ran over the line, stole the football and pretty much put the game away. With Army playing so well against an outmatched and underprepared Middle Tennessee State team - it really did seem like it was over that early. By the start of the second quarter Army had earned 10 first downs, was 4/4 on 3rd down, and perfect 2/2 passing for 28 yards.

It's too bad that MTSU absorbed so many injuries - they got dinged A LOT. After the game Blue Raiders head coach Tom Sockstill placed fault with Army's style of play,

"Whenever you play an Army (sic) or somebody that runs the triple option it always helps you not to play the next week because we got so many guys hurt. You saw we had so many guys coming off with knees and ankles and shoulders."

The whole Stockstill postgame interview plays like a deposition.

Firstly, if you don't want your defense to get hurt teach them how to make a stop before a 13 minute or 19 play drive, whichever comes first. Secondly, ask the players how they got hurt on Saturday... ZERO injuries had anything to do with low blocks as Coach Stockstill pretends. Army's blocks are legal and defensive players should be coached to use their hands on low blocks.

At 42-0 You almost want to accept the coach's excuses out of pity. He's going to try to blame the triple option for injuring his guys and when I look back at Army's offense on tape it's 5 yards galore against a team that looked physically outmatched. No real technique, no real adjustment aside from substitution, now that I think about it MTSU came in with a very spring football look.

I get it, Army is a tough season opener to take on 3 weeks' notice. The fact remains, teams don't get injured because of cut blocks per se, teams get injured out of unpreparedness, and that is something I would like the coach to answer to before he attacks Army's time-tested football techniques. Just go back and watch the tape and try to find a cut block injury from this game. It never happened, Coach.

I'm being hard on head coach Stockstill, but I actually think he did a great job coaching while blindfolded. Sometimes all you can do is learn from the examples of other people; let's all remember the importance of being honest with ourselves.

Middle Tennessee was bruised pretty badly with this one. Even MTSU fans that didn't expect the win didn't expect to lay that egg.
MTSU came in unprepared and they paid the price on the scoreboard. Time after time MTSU was touched by misfortune. From the first 3 and out to the turnovers, to their diminishing will to play defense, to the drive extending roughing the kicker penalty after which Sandon McCoy ran his third touchdown in. Even that extra point bounced in off the upright. And seriously, what the hell was that series at the end of the half?

If Army is going to play in midseason form, then I'm going to feel justified in talking about midseason topics. Army's goals for this season should include a Lambert trophy. If all of this season's goals seem attainable (with this being a casual mention of BYU's 55-3 pasting of Navy) then a Lambert trophy should be equally within reach.
Regarding protecting home field, Army demonstrated a unique home field advantage with the socially distanced corps of cadets moving out of the east stands and not only reclaiming traditional cadet seating, but expanding to take over the west stands and parts of Eastern and Central New York down to the southern tier.

Army is 71-25 in home openers at Michie Stadium.

Considering BYU and UTEP are by far the two westernmost teams this year, this would be a great year for Army to take it personal and win back the Lambert Trophy.

The last time college football had such an eastern center of gravity was probably some time in the 1916-1919 range. Here is an article highlighting the end-of-season rankings for the 1917 season. Included is an interesting description of Denver University's 9-0 season - from which you can see how even winning teams out west were received.

We have another token (sic) team, 9-0 Denver University, Rocky Mountain champs, but they were almost completely ignored by the national press this season, and I suspect that most writers would have known nothing about them until they read the football annuals after the season. Furthermore, Denver repeatedly struggled to beat mediocre-to-bad teams, including an egregious 20-19 win at 0-8-1 Tulsa, a team that lost to Oklahoma State by 39 and to Oklahoma by 80 over the following 2 weeks.

At this point, the Pacific Coast Conference was just starting to expand adding Washington State and Stanford in 1917 and 1918. Idaho, Stanford and USC would all join the league by 1922.

Though Cal and USC would go on to become legit powerhouses in the coming years, the young Pacific Coast league was less competitive back then and wasn't really that influential in terms of national football. You can look at the All-America rosters for those years and you will detect an eastern selection bias.

If the Lambert trophy is meant to honor the glory days of eastern football, then this season should further heighten the importance of the award. It's a lot of time and a lot of football between now and when the Lambert trophy is awarded. I don't know how things are going to play out this year, but I will let you know that I really like the idea of Eastern-only college football, and I hope the trend sticks.

Anyway the journey starts here. Available now are the Middle Tennessee game notes for their trip to West Point.

Update: Army game notes are up.

I figured I would squeeze this yearbook entry in since it will be a while before the Blue Raiders come back around on the schedule.

MTSU's library and digital collections presents the Midlander yearbook online collection. The university's .pdf interface is a little bit clunky, but usable, but the deal breaker is that searching within each yearbook leaves a lot to be desired. I saw that Lyrasis digitized the collection, so I checked the internet archive and found a searchable collection of Midlanders. That one is going to be better for all-around use.

Thrill-a-minute I know.

The yearbook has some solid writing from student-journalists that followed school sports closely. They have nice spotlight stories about those in the sports programs and the takeaway is that of a collection that offers a very polished history of Middle Tennessee's sporting legacy.

You can find a list of other college yearbooks along with the Middle Tennessee State Midlander under the Yearbooks tab above.

<div style="background-color: white; color: #191919; font-family: "trebuchet ms", arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-align: center;">-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
<div style="background-color: white; color: #191919; font-family: "trebuchet ms", arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-align: center;">
<div style="background-color: white; color: #191919; font-family: "trebuchet ms", arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-align: center;">It is the mission of The Unbalanced Line Online Library to present important and interesting historical texts to college football fans. It's a loss, if it's a losing streak, you still have to get up, address the problem(s) and play on.

Everything about this game was unsettling, everything. The referees had quiet whistles, Western Kentucky had a snazzy red white and blue Hilltoppers logo on their helmets. I picked up on it watching on tv, but there was also a television production element that really added to the funhouse mirror effect. Maybe it was the camera angles, or the crew, but the coverage was dizzying. Then add in that the whole thing had kind of a groundhog Day effect to it with the rhythmic droning of "FIRST DOWN HILLTOPPERS!!!"

First, I am so used to CBSSports coverage of Army football that I take for granted things like instant replays, and solid camera work. Those are the major things when I say it reminded me of old CSTV college football broadcasts. Second, the broadcast crew kept saying things like "3rd and 3 this is right where Army wants to be." right while the offense is showing us with their play, with their body language and with their effort that it was clearly not where Army wanted to be.

Army had four full possessions in the first half and three of them were 3-and-outs. When you're Wannstedting around like that and trying for 3-5 yards a play, and all of sudden you're behind the sticks and you're not getting your 3 yards/play, i will tell you - it's a miracle Army was within 10 points at any point of that game. Army's offense didn't show much enthusiasm at all. The defense played some bend -but-break defense and next thing you know you're in a big hole. In a game like this when you see the possession number it reminds you of how much the offense is the engine of Army's football strategy. A couple of missed blocks out of the backfield... a couple of 3 and outs in a row, you're looking at a disaster.

3/11 on 3rd down.
208 yards total offense.
71 yards passing.

It was a nightmare. Army's defense would do fine for 2 plays in a row and then get sliced. They would do just enough to keep the team in the game, and then do something like give up 14 yards on 3rd to offer up a 4th down try... Next thing you know it's 1ST DOWN HILLTOPPERS. The whole thing was Fright Night.

It’s all about the response. Is this a crossroads for Army football? No, I don't think so, Army will have ample opportunity to achieve their team goals this year, so the mentality gets back to that one-game season. It is a disappointing loss, and I found it pretty humbling to hear the coaches and players self flagellate after getting soundly stomped. As harsh as his criticism was, Jeff Monken's assessment of the game was spot on. Tulane was the more prepared, more organized team to say nothing about Tulane's size advantage and their can-opener of an offense.

The last time Army lost the time of possession statistic was the way back in the first game of 2017. Army beat Fordham 64-6, and kicked off enough to lose the possession number. Last week Tulane won the day with 30:39 of possession to Army's 28:36.

If I take away one thing from this game - It really highlights the fine line that Monken's teams have walked in the last 3 years. Tulane played a fine game. Just like Hawaii played a fine game, just like Buffalo played a fine game, Just like San Diego State and Duke and Rice all played fine games. Army football has been able to regularly wrestle wins away from teams and just as they win games by converting 4th and 2 - the other side of the coin is losing on that 4th and 2 conversion - or in this case, just losing in general. That's the kind of edge that Army plays on - there have been a lot of Army games that Jeff Monken has coached where this team is lucky to escape with their hats. Army football has transformed into a winner, but let's not forget that this team can lose to any team on the schedule.

As for Tulane. I had a bad feeling about this one from day 1 of the season. I don’t think we match up well against Tulane's players and our defensive scheme seems to get drawn and quartered like that, by not even the RPO itself, but the athletic improvisations that stem from the run of play. give Tulane credit. They should be proud of where their team stands right now. Tulane had six different people carry the ball and 5 of them ran for touchdowns. Army's players took responsibility with Elijah Riley citing not getting off
blocks and not tackling as the reason Army's D fell apart. You could really tell in the post game press conference that Army players and coaches hate losing.

Is the house on fire? No, not even close, but this loss stings. The loss ends the home win streak, and this marks three straight losses to Tulane and a sense that the series is slipping away. Tulane has extended their series lead over Army to 12-9-1.

Tulane and Army are scheduled to play again next year Sept. 19th in Uptown New Orleans.

Tulane Army story, stats and highlights.

This one is one of my favorite games, and I'm glad it's back on the schedule.

Army's last two losses were of the overtime variety (Michigan and Oklahoma in'18). Prior to that was the season opener loss at Duke. Before that there was the 2017 North Texas last second North Texas loss....

and before that the previous loss for Army football was Tulane's comeback win in 2017. Two years is a long time to wait for retribution, and most players on Army's roster didn't play in the 2017 game.

Tulane looks better than they have looked in a long time. I don't know what to expect out of this game, as I have no idea what Kelvin Hopkins status is. Tulane QB Justin McMillan is 8-2 as a starter for Tulane.

Here are the Army game notes (pdf).
Jabari Laws got the start and almost made it to the end of the first quarter when he was sidelined by a tackle that was deemed a targeting penalty. That's tough luck for Laws. Christian Anderson came on to finish the game and performed pretty well. It wasn't 137 yards in his first start, but 75 yards in 3 quarters of play is nice. Zero turnovers is a good clean start too.

It seemed like Army moved away from live reads with Anderson, relying mostly on the dive play - which is just a handoff, not a read. They used a lot of alternate motion and play design, but there was an awful lot of plays with no live read, whether it was attacking the edge with the rocket toss or inside using Slomka power. Anyway, Anderson came on and within one quarter Army was in the lead 24-14. In the second half we saw a couple of good option plays.

With 4 penalties in the first 5 minutes, Morgan State got off to a pretty bad start but overcame their play with a couple of big plays.
Morgan State's first score was a 3rd and 13, 72 yard heave.

Their second score was set up by a Jabari Laws fumble deep in Army territory.

Coach Monken went ape after the second MSU touchdown. That's the only time Army has trailed a game in regulation this year. The jolt worked and the team pulled together 31 point blowout featuring 403 rush yards.

Elijah Riley said this after the game "We came out in the first half and second half with low energy, not really focused on the task at hand. Couldn’t tell you the reason for it "We shouldn’t come out any game with low energy. Going forward, we’re just going to have to lock it in, not allow another game like this to take place."

It's important to recognize that, and let's be glad that we're figuring that out in the first 1/3 of the season.

Simply put there needs to be better focus in all phases. Army seems to get dunked on in every game - it's one thing to have that happen on 4th down in the Big House, it's another to give up that kind of stuff at home against a 1AA squad. Again, no disrespect to Morgan State - they'll get their share of wins with Tyrone Wheatley as coach.

Jabari Laws got the start and almost made it to the end of the first quarter when he was sidelined by a tackle that was deemed a targeting penalty. We may not know the status of any of the QBs until next week. Christian Anderson came on to finish the game and performed pretty well. It wasn't 137 yards in his first start, but 75 yards in 3 quarters of play is nice. Zero turnovers is a good clean start too.
So the team is down 14-7, Anderson steps on the field and - within one play the game is tied. It took just one more quarter and Army had a 24-14 half time lead.

It seemed like Army moved away from read option with Anderson, relying mostly on the dive - which is just a handoff, not a read. They used variations in motion and play design but there were lot of plays with no live read, whether it was attacking the edge with the rocket toss or inside using Slomka power. Hey, simpler is better is some cases. I still think it's amazing how the offense can go back into such a small base set of plays and still dominate.

Army football now has one week off before facing Tulane at Michie Stadium. I'd say it's a pretty good time for a bye week. Connor Slomka carried for a career high 110 yards and a TD, Artice Hobbs carried the ball once and caught one pass - so mark him down for 89 yards and 2 touchdowns.

So it's 3-1 for Army who now have 15 straight home wins. The Jeff Monken era has brought incredible success for Army football and particularly their play at home.

I don't know why I didn't realize this until now, but the Hawaii game will kick off after midnight (ET).

When I lived in Oregon I used to cherish the late Hawaii game, because with the Pacific time zone - it seemed like games would wrap up relatively early on the mainland, and Hawaii gave me one last game to watch after the PAC 12 late games. I don't know how I'm going to like watching Army play after midnight, correction: I know that I'm going o enjoy watching Army play after midnight, but I don't know how well my neighbors and my kids will appreciate it.
UTSA's defense changed up their look late in the 1st quarter to a sort of 5-3-3 blanket defense ultimately forcing 2 fumbles and 4 punts before Army would finally break through and score. Jabari laws' 41 yard scamper on the first play of the drive put Army over on the San Antonio Roadrunners and has me optimistic about the future of the offense. It was Laws' first start he carried the ball 23 times for 137 yards and 1 TD.

As much as I focus on the offense, it was really the superior defensive effort in the first half that set the tone for this one. Army never trailed and never seemed in trouble, though the Roadrunners played them tough in spots. I never get tired of going into a game expecting to be mesmerized by the offense, but the defense comes on and just smashes people. UTSA was 7/15 on critical downs including the fake punt and a4th down conversion pass on one of their touchdown drives.

30,000 people showed up, which is a decent crowd. San Antonio, TX pretty good place for a ball game. I know there was a post game alma mater misunderstanding with the UTSA band. That's the kind of thing you just gotta let go.The Army football program and its traditions have the respect of UTSA its program and its people. I know UTSA will show that whenever Army makes another trip to the Alamodome. It's nice to get the show on the road once in a while. Army will be home for the next month with games against Morgan State, then a bye week, and then Tulane.

Kell Walker had 80 yards on 5 carries. Connor Slomka had 17 carries for 59 yards.
This as Army's first loss since September 22 last year. It takes a road game to ranked Michigan to knock this team off their game. This was a winnable game, in a long, long line of winnable games. There were some coaching decisions that hurt Army's chances of winning,

Michigan's 4th down fake was pretty snappy. Army showed the
same pressure after the UM penalty on 4th so the Wolverines audible into
a little pass play.

I would really rather talk about what Jeff Monken and company have done for the fortunes of Army football. It's amazing.

I don't know if you could ask for a more exciting ball game either.

With such a great run of success Army football has sort realized some other measures of their success. It's a strange measure to mark these twin OT losses to Oklahoma and Michigan as Army's measuring stick simply because they are, after all, losses. This game just like Oklahoma last season should be a valid measuring stick by
which to judge Army football. It's no wonder why I believe ties are a
good thing for football. You won't be able to convince me that the
institution of overtime is a good thing for college football.

What a second half. Army gets Michigan to go 3 and out to open the half. They get a 2 yard run from Slomka and then Artice Hobbs pulls in a 34 yard catch and run that set Army up for what would have been a go ahead score. Army works the ball down to the Michigan 1 yard (2nd and 1) line before a penalty turned the situation into a 3rd and goal from the 6. It's rare for the offense to go into panic mode but panic set in on 3rd down - timeout called and then Army comes in and tries to throw when they know they have 2 downs to score. Army has pounded the ball and dominated possession for the last two years. I think if the coaching staff had a chance to call that 3rd down again they would probably run Slomka and another keeper with Hopkins.

Michigan played solid defense out of the 3-3-5 stack. Not every team can succeed against Army's option with the 3-3-5, but Michigan's defense played alright. The Michigan Defensive Coordinator said they played out of the stack and blitzed every down. I thought Army kept it pretty simple on offense.

What might we take away from another loss like this one?
Well, for one we can look forward to dealing out some pay back as soon as Oklahoma comes calling next year.

Other than that it's Army's first loss in a year, OT loss - probably should have been a win.
