Yearbook: West Virginia Wesleyan

Thursday, January 19, 2012

In doing a little bit of research on hall of fame coach Earl "Greasy" Neale I turned up these West Virginia Wesleyan yearbooks.

Another entry hosted by the Internet Archive and another top quality yearbook both in content and in its reproduction.

The "Greasy" Neale angle got me very interested in this yearbook as Neale starred at end at West Virginia Wesleyan before he took on coaching duties at his alma mater. In my eyes, Greasy Neale's best work came between 1919 and 1922. In those 4 years Neale went 30-4-2 including the 1921 Washington and Jefferson Rose Bowl appearance.

The 1922 Rose Bowl ended in a 0-0 tie, a number and a result that I somehow always get back to. Further,  this Rose Bowl is notable as it was the last one to feature one team playing only 11 men in the historic postseason contest.

The yearbooks as represented by the Internet Archive are stellar. Most paint a very vivid picture of life in and around the WV Wesleyan campus.

Another good one - Hail to West Virginia Wesleyan and Greasy Neale!
